Unscripted

This is a storytelling game about improvising movies. You can play it with friends, or by yourself. All you need is 10–30 minutes and your imagination.

You'll take inspiration from your favorite films to come up with an original premise, condense it into a logline (a movie idea summarized in 1–2 sentences), and then improvise the most memorable scenes of that movie and watch the story play out.

How to Play

1. Invent a premise. Take two movies you love and remix them into something new:

  • X meets Y — mix and match story elements from two films. What if the plot of one took place in the setting of the other? What if you swapped their heroes and goals? ("Shrek" meets "The Cabin in the Woods"…)
  • Flip the Premise — pick a movie and reverse its core elements. What if the good guys were the villains? What if it happened in the opposite setting? (Reverse "Terminator": what if robots came from the past instead of the future?)

2. Write the logline. Pin down the 4 key story elements, then pitch the idea in a sentence or two:

  • Setting — where does the story take place?
  • Hero — who is the protagonist?
  • Objective — what does the hero want, and why does it matter to them?
  • Opposition — what makes it hard to achieve, or who stands in the way?

In a [setting], a [hero] must [objective], despite [opposition].

3. Improvise the scenes. Play out the most memorable moments of your movie — a Catalyst that kicks off the story, Challenges on the way to the goal, Complications when things go wrong, and a Climax where the hero faces the final obstacle. Each scene follows a simple Setup → Action → Resolution structure.

Game Variants

  • Play With a Friend — one player gives a premise, the other pitches a logline in a minute, then you improvise the story together.
  • Dumb and Dumber — come up with the most absurd movie idea you can. The stupider, the better.
  • The Series — improvise a sequel, or a whole series of connected stories.

Great For

  • Creative warm-ups — stretch your imagination in a few minutes.
  • Brainstorming TTRPG adventures — use loglines as seeds for one-shots and campaigns.
  • Party game — pitch ridiculous movie ideas with friends and vote on the best.
  • Writers & screenwriters — practice condensing a story to its essence and improvising scenes.
